§ 05 - Editorial notes
Company overview
Clevry is the trading name of Clevry UK Ltd, a Brighton-based business-psychology publisher whose roots go back to 1991. The company was incorporated in 1997 and traded as Criterion Partnership Limited until April 2021. That spring the UK firm and the Finnish Studentwork and Sharper group companies were all renamed Clevry, and Companies House lists Helsinki-based Clevry Oy as owning 75% or more of the UK company. The platform delivers norm-referenced personality questionnaires, ability tests and situational judgement tests. It also offers recorded one-way video interviews, an interview builder, a skills-first ATS and an AI Personality Questionnaire Builder that maps a pasted job ad onto Clevry's existing scale library. Clevry says it has 2,000+ clients. It publishes pay-as-you-go prices (£135 per personality questionnaire, £40 per ability test or SJT) alongside annual plans priced by headcount.
Regulatory exposure
Clevry says its scoring is transparent and not machine-learned, so it is arguable whether its core tests are 'AI systems' under the EU AI Act. However, the AI PQ Builder, the 'predictive analytics' in Performance Insights and automatic score-check sifting all shape recruitment decisions, which Annex III point 4 treats as high-risk. Clevry sells into EU markets and has offices in Sweden and Finland. The Digital AI Omnibus has deferred those obligations to 2 December 2027. Recorded interviews are rated by people, and no emotion recognition is disclosed, so exposure under Art. 5(1)(f) and the Illinois AI Video Interview Act looks low. Clevry also markets to US employers through a US-English (en_us) site. Its traffic-light job-match scores and threshold gateways would likely count as an AEDT for NYC employers, who must commission an annual independent bias audit; none is published for Clevry. Illinois HB 3773 notice duties and Colorado SB 26-189 disclosures (from 1 January 2027) fall on US deployers. California's FEHA ADS rules require four-year record retention, but Clevry's knowledge base says candidate data is anonymised after 12 months (24 if hired) and never kept longer, so California employers would need to export records themselves.
Path to a higher score
The quickest gains would come from publishing what Clevry says it already holds. That means public versions of the personality and ability technical manuals, with validity and adverse-impact results by sex, race/ethnicity and age, and an annual independent bias audit of the job-match and cut-off sift in NYC LL 144 format. Clevry should document the AI PQ Builder: its model and provider, where job ads are stored, and how recommendations are checked and reviewed. It should publish its DPA and a sub-processor list that reconciles the 'no third parties' claim with Azure hosting and the lovable.app-hosted widget. It should also add EU AI Act deployer guidance with an Art. 27 FRIA template, and a longer-retention option for California customers. A public status page, a security.txt contact and a product changelog would give it a post-market monitoring record where today there is almost none.
